🤗 Tokyo - Ueno, Coffee Ojo, Coffee King City, Ueno Popular Tea Shop
It opened in 1975 and has been in business for nearly 50 years. It's in a small shopping street east of Ueno and Gotouchi stations, and most maps recommend getting off at Ueno. Personally, if you just want to go straight to this Coffee Ojo, you can consider getting off at Gotouchi station, which is easy to get to and easy to find after getting out of the station.
I was told that there would be a lot of people waiting in line, but probably because it was a weekday morning when I went there, there was only one group of people at the entrance, so I waited for a few minutes and then entered the store. Inside the store is the same old Showa-flavored décor that has been around for decades, with a sense of age that has remained unchanged for several years.
I ordered a breakfast set in bulk Japanese, a very tempting thick roasted toast + black tea, and a green ice cream topped with soda. The waitress was very nice and probably realized I was a foreigner, so she didn't say too much or ask too many questions, so I just ordered quietly.
While I was waiting, I noticed that even though there were a few empty tables in the store, the waiter didn't let the people queuing outside in, so he seemed to be in control of the pace of entering the store and serving the food. Some people who were waiting in line got impatient and pushed their way in, asking, “Ma da?
Breakfast is served one by one. First came the black tea, with cups upside down on a saucer and a special tea maker. Then came the toast, an extra-large portion that smelled of freshly baked bread and butter. And finally, a summery ice cream soda with a hard-boiled egg.
Pour the black tea from the brewer into a cup, and it fills up to the brim. The flavor is rich and lingering. The toast is crispy, with a slight salty flavor, and I wonder what kind of salt was used. Seemingly simple toast and black tea, but they are both top-notch flavors that I have never encountered before. Eating toast and sipping tea at the same time was a real pleasure! Before I even finished half of the toast, I realized that Coffee King City is definitely a place that I will miss and visit again and again.
Ice-cream soda is also a standard in many tea stores. A cup of black tea is at the bottom of the cup, and it is a good place to stop and soothe the high emotion a little bit with the cool taste of the soda. After the ice cream, the mood gradually calmed down, so spent a cozy and satisfying morning.
In the evening, I talked to my host in Tokyo about Coffee King Castle, and she remembered that a Japanese friend had taken her there before, and the pasta she ordered was very good. The Japanese friend said she used to go to ojo, a kind of tea store, when she was very young. I envy her so much that she said she would like to try my recommended Okonomiyaki Toast next time she goes to Ueno 🍞 It would be great if we can have it with our friends ❤️
🤗 Tokyo - Nippori.カフェ&レストラン談話室ニュートーキョー
Every morning, I take the Ashikaga-ku Shiren line and change at Nippori or Nishi-Nippori, so I choose the “Talking Room” near this subway station for breakfast. There are a lot of breakfast places in the neighborhood, but I like the name “Talking Room”. The interior of the restaurant is somewhat modern and spacious.

There are a lot of breakfast places in the neighborhood, but I like the name “Talking Room”. The interior of the restaurant is somewhat modern and spacious.
The taste of the toast is ok, but it's mediocre compared to coffee ojo. Loose egg with double yolk! I accidentally poked it with my fork and it was all over the place, it was a total waste. It was so embarrassing, the sales clerk even looked at me when I passed by. ......
Their fruit pudding boat is highly recommended. The banana slices are ripe and fragrant, and the cream and pudding complement each other perfectly. After eating the pudding boat and drinking a cup of hot milk to lubricate your stomach, it is enough to walk into the rainy day outside.
If you have Nippori on your schedule, stop by the conversation room for a brunch.
🤗 Kyoto-Kawaramachi, 喫茶 ソワレ(Soirée)
Kissa Suwale was opened in 1948. The name “Soirée” means “evening party” or “good night” in French. The store has a distinctive blue and purple lighting. It is said that the founder's friend, coloring researcher Rokuro Uemura, suggested that the blue light would make women look more beautiful and men look younger. Indeed, with the blue and purple night atmosphere, everything in the store has a haunting beauty.
The walls of the interior, the interior and exterior of the building, the beautiful wood carvings next to the staircase seats, the rich fruits of grape leaves, and the intricately carved sunflowers were all very advanced at that time, and it was described in the brochure of the tea store that it was designed by the founder's friend, the sculptor Shoharu Ikeno, who was studying in France at that time.
The famous friend of the owner of Soirée Ichime is too many, isn't it?
I ordered this colorful jelly soda, which is the most recommended in the menu. It's not quite the same as the watery jelly you get in China, it's a bit more faceted. The colorful jelly has been transformed into a slightly mysterious and exotic drink by the blue and purple atmosphere of the store.
How do you make such colorful jellies? So I read the pamphlet I picked up at the front of the store:
The owner, Nijime's daughter, didn't like milk when she was a little girl, so Nijime's wife, Naruko Motoki, tried to make five colors of jelly and put them in the milk. Jelly milk became the menu of the store. In the middle of the Showa period, in order to encourage young women to come to the café, which at that time was predominantly a male establishment, Naruko's “ゼリー ポンチ,” a local Kobe apple cider, began to be served at the store. The ゼリー ポンチ is a local Kobe apple cider. Slowly, the ゼリー ポンチ jelly has become more and more tempting.
It is also a tea store that appeared in Yumi's photo albums.
This kind of store has been passed down from generation to generation, each generation of shopkeepers add their own style characteristics, the store remains unchanged and seems to be constantly changing. Suddenly, I feel that these old Showa-era tea stores are a microcosm of Kyoto, passed down with the seasons and the years, a tradition and a fashion.
🤗 Kyoto -Inoda Coffee イノダコーヒ
I bought a limited edition TN Pocket Book from Shin Fung Kan, and then came to the famous Inoda Kohi for lunch. The restaurant looks like an old townhouse building, inside the store is a very retro space, are 4 seats round table, I casually scribbled in tourist attire to sit alone, looking back and forth in formal wear staff, for a few moments I suspect I have entered the wrong store.
I ordered a Roast Beef Sandwich and a Fruit Buffet from the September 10th limited menu. I wanted to order the pudding barfi, but the waiter told me it was sold out. The Roast Beef Sandwich is rich in flavor, the roast beef is juicy and combined with the sweet and spicy teriyaki sauce, it melts in your mouth and is enjoyable. The fruit barfi had a very sour orange petal, hahahaha, all other flavors were great. Probably the entree here is the most recommended.
The right half of inoda coffee is the exterior of the townhouse, while the left half is the Western-style décor, and the two parts of the store are also completely different. I didn't eat on the left side, so I didn't take any pictures.
🍮 A must for coffee shop lovers: 《Kyoto Retro Coffee Shop》🎉
There are so many tea stores in Kyoto. I fell in love with this magazine book at Maruzen Bookstore. The word “Retro” in the title is derived from the English word “retrospective,” meaning “retrospective” or “nostalgic. Retro” means ‘retrospective’ or ‘nostalgic’.
The book introduces 34 vintage-style tea stores in Kyoto that are worth visiting. The book is organized into 4 themes:
- authentic pure cafes that have retained the vintage atmosphere of their founding days
- cafes with individuality in architecture and space
- cafes that have long been loved by local residents and office workers
- cafes popular for their old-fashioned specialties
The Kissa ソワレ and Inoda Coffee introduced in this article are also included in the 34. There is also a two-page map of Kyoto's tea stores in the appendix, so take it with you and start a tour of the tea stores.
