On the second night of my Japan trip, I wanted to dine at Dotonbori, but I hit a brick wall repeatedly. Osaka really does punish everyone who doesn't make restaurant reservations.
Dragging our tired yet strong Shukaku with us, we blundered into an alley. With the belief that a good wine is good for you, we ended up in a small restaurant that didn't seem to have too many customers.
We didn't know the dishes, prices and flavors beforehand, but travel is supposed to be a strange encounter, so make it happen!
Upon entering, I was immediately surrounded by a strong izakaya atmosphere. Like Goro in the Japanese drama “The Lonely Gourmet”, we were eager and a little helpless.
Eager because of the anticipation of the food, helpless because of the dilemma of not being able to read the menu.
We adopted the map-ordering method, and this/that completed our order the whole time. During this time, I even took a picture of the dish on the next lady's table to order.
While we waited for our food, we sat at the bar and watched in boredom as the chef boy roasted the bird over charcoal. A few times we saw the meat getting mushy, but he was relaxing and playing with his cell phone, which was so flaccid it was scary.
Grilled Fish: The flavor was strong enough. Although I was originally indifferent to this dish, my husband said it was the best fish he's ever had, so I fell in love with it.
Baked Rice Cake: Cheese rolled inside, sticky and sinewy. Praised frequently.
Grilled Rice Balls: I actually found this dish delicious after not usually eating candied eggs! The rice balls were cute in shape and the caramelized flavor was just right with the freshness of the shredded seaweed.
Dioxin-covered roasted lotus root: charred, crispy, and surprisingly delicious.
Tuna rolled in seaweed: This is the first time I've seen this way of eating, and I can't stop eating it. The light flavor of the tuna is wrapped in the seaweed, and the bite is refreshing.
Various small yakitori: I can't remember the names, probably different parts of the cow and pig, and the flavor is on the level of most izakaya.
Bacon Rolled Asparagus: Moderately flavorful (I was actually going to order the bacon rolled with scallions).
McDonald's French Fries + Deep Fried Snake Fritters: The combination of the two is a great way to enjoy a drink.
Cold Beer + Iced Oolong Tea
The meal cost a total of 8,190 yen, which is more affordable than the Netflix restaurant, and yielded a lot of unexpected happiness.
The flavor was not Michelin-level, but it was impressive. There are only two clerks in the store, and the owner's wife sends each customer out the door with a bow of thanks, a picture that is a classic recreation of The Lonely Gourmet.
