Asakusa is the birthplace of Tokyo, and Sensoji Temple is the oldest temple in Tokyo. The full name of Sensoji Temple is Jinlongshan Sensokannonji Temple. The temple is located on the west bank of the Sumida River in Taito-ku, Tokyo, and according to legend, in the 36th year of Emperor Suiko (628 AD), two fishermen fished in the Miyado River and fished up a 5.5-centimeter-high statue of the Golden Kannon, and the nearby people raised funds to build a temple to worship this Buddha statue, which is Sensoji Temple. Since then, the temple has been repeatedly destroyed by fire and several times. In the early Edo period, Tokugawa Ieyasu rebuilt Sensoji Temple, turning it into a large group of temples and becoming a symbol of Asakusa.

Sensoji Temple is now the headquarters of Japan's "Seikanon Sect". The Holy Guanyin sect was originally a branch of the Japanese Tiantai sect, and it was officially recognized as an independent Buddhist sect after World War II.
