This is a contest that has been going on since 2012, which focuses on choosing the most popular railroad bento through online voting, and at first the contest was mainly for railroad bento in the JR East area (Tohoku, Kanto, and Koshinetsu regions).
Now, 12 years later, the contest has become a must-contest on Japan's railroads. From Hokkaido in the north to Kagoshima in the south, everyone who has a railroad lunchbox is eager to take part in the battle and win the title of "Bento Shogun".
In the Battle of the Bento 2023, 59 types of bento were up for grabs. Online voting was conducted from October 1 to November 30, and 11,437 votes were cast.
The final winners were the following.
🤗 The 12th General of Railway Bento
"Chicken Rice at Daikan, the hometown of the loyal dog Hachikō, 1,350 yen
This is a railroad bento that was launched to commemorate the opening of the new station building at Odate Station on the Ouwamoto Line (October 2023) and Hachikō's 100th birthday.
It is based on Hanazono's signature item, "Chicken Rice," with local specialty ingredients such as chicken and dried lavender radish. This is the 3rd time Hwasen has been honored as a Railway Bento Shogun since 2015 and 2016.
🤗 Railroad Bento Vice Admiral
"Curry Seasoned Beef Rice" 1350 yen
This is a curry-flavored version of the "Beef Rice" of Shinpakuya, Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, which was once named the first "Railway Bento Shogun". Domannaka, the Yamagata brand of steamed rice, is topped with minced beef seasoned with a secret sauce and curry-flavored boiled beef, making it a perfect combination that is highly acclaimed by Japanese people.
