Tofu has been famous in Kyoto since the Edo period, and is a simple, light and elegant ingredient. Because it is such a pure ingredient, it can be transformed into a variety of dishes, such as tofu in soup, tofu skin, cold tofu, and even desserts, each of which can surprise your tastebuds! In this article, we have listed a few tofu restaurants in Kyoto that you can include in your dining itinerary!
As monks are only vegetarian, they eat protein-rich tofu instead of meat to replenish their energy and nutrients, so many tofu restaurants are located in the vicinity of temples, including Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Nanzen-dera Temple, so that you can enjoy traditional Japanese food with tofu as the main ingredient while paying homage to the temples.
