Japan's terrain is characterized by mountains and forests, so there are many places suitable for hiking. Why don't you come and experience the fun of outdoor hiking?
🤗 Kamikochi
Address: Yasumo Kamikochi, Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture
Kamikochi is located in the upper reaches of the Azukawa River in western Nagano, at an altitude of about 1,500 meters, and is surrounded by primeval forests of white birches and larch trees, with the Osho Pond, Tashiro Pond, and Myojin Pond spread out in the area, and the bottom of the pond is crystal clear. Under the bright autumn sun, it presents a stunning scene of golden valleys and mirror-like blue waves.
The wooden suspension bridge over the Azukawa River, Kawatobashi, is a symbol of Kamikochi, and has a stunning view of the magnificent Hotaka mountain range and Mount Yakadake in the background. It is also the starting point for a number of hiking routes, such as Kawatobashi - Myojin and Kawatobashi - Taishoike, which are suitable for short hikes with a one-way duration of just over one hour. There is also the Kawatobashi - Tokorozawa route, which takes 130 minutes one way and is suitable for experienced hikers. Kamikochi is also an excellent outdoor campground where you can go to a designated campsite after hiking and sleep peacefully in the nature.
🤗 Oze National Park
Address: Katashinmura, Tone-gun, Gunma
Oze National Park is located on the border of Gunma, Niigata, Tochigi and Fukushima prefectures. Over thousands of years, the Oze area has experienced many volcanic eruptions, resulting in a beautiful natural environment and unique topography, providing an ideal hiking destination for hiking enthusiasts.
The highest peak in the park is the extinct volcano Suzutake, located in the center section, overlooking Oze-numa and Oze-ohara, the latter being the iconic landscape of Oze with an elevation of 1,400 meters and the largest mountainous wetland in Honshu, Japan. The scenery is beautiful and many rare plants can be observed, such as the kannon lily and the Nikko Yellow Sugarberry, some of which even originate from the Ice Age.
There are elevated boardwalks between the main scenery and plenty of rest areas, making it easy to start hiking. Especially in autumn, the temperature is pleasant, and the wetlands are deeply and lightly dyed with orange and charming hues. The most popular routes are Hatobe Pass, which is near Ozewara, or Oshimizu, which is close to Ozemara, and takes about one hour to reach Ozewara.
🤗 Nakasendo
Address: Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture
On the south side of Ena Gorge in Gifu Prefecture, in the midst of lush jungles, a stone road stretches endlessly, and in the depths of the road lies the Nakayama Road, a road steeped in history. In ancient times, it was an important post road connecting Edo (now Tokyo) and Kyoto, and 69 lodging houses were located along the way, with a lot of traffic.
Nowadays, the area is not only famous for sightseeing, but also for hiking. The 9-kilometer route from Magome to Tsumagojuku is called the “Nakasendo Hiking Trail,” and it takes about three hours to complete, offering a panoramic view of mountains, valleys, and waterfalls, as well as a unique view of the autumn foliage.
🤗 Akame Shijuhachi Falls

Akame Shijuhachi Falls, located on the border between Mie and Nara Prefectures, has been selected as one of the “Heisei Top 100 Famous Waterfalls” and the “Japan Top 100 Waterfalls”. In fact, “forty-eight” is not a real number, but a description of the number of waterfalls, which are spread along the Takigawa Valley, about 4 kilometers long, and covered with thick trees. Historically, this area was also a training ground for the famous Iga-ryu ninja, adding to the mystical atmosphere. Near the entrance, there is a ninja training school where you can rent ninja clothes and experience ninjutsu.
The total length of the 4-kilometer trail between the waterfalls is 4 kilometers, and the round-trip time is 3 hours. The time required to get to the representative Akame Five Falls varies from about 30 minutes to Fudo Falls, 1 hour to Chidan Falls and Buhiki Falls, 2.5 hours to Hodan Falls, and 3 hours to Iwaguchi Falls.
