Kyushu deserves to be a paradise for train tours, with an endless variety of styles of trains, whether it's for family, sightseeing, food, or ho-hum sighs, and the retro interiors are really more than enough to take pictures. Don't miss the following three food trains!
🤗 01 ARU RESSHA
The ARU train, also known as the “Dessert Train,” with its dazzling hot-stamped gold body and high-quality interior, is a luxury train designed by the team of award-winning train designer Ruiji Mitooka, following the launch of the Kyushu region's Seven Stars.
ARU Train, which has a gimmick of a dessert train, invites master dessert chef Yukihiro Narisawa to produce, who is a veteran from Tokyo's beyond-famous restaurants. The menu changes according to the season, and all the seasonal ingredients of Kyushu are used, and drinks are free of charge, so it's a ritual to eat exquisite food while looking at the scenery!
The train consists of 2 cars, car #1 in bright maple and car #2 in walnut, with luxurious and detailed interiors, paired with an unparalleled culinary experience, it's a dream trip. There are only 28 seats in the train, so you need to reserve your seat in advance!
🤗 02 JR Kyushu 36+3 Luxury Sightseeing Train
If you want to see all of Kyushu in a short period of time, this 36+3 Luxury Sightseeing Train is the way to go! Traveling around Kyushu in 5 days, the train passes through Kumamoto, Kagoshima, Miyazaki, Oita, Saga, and Nagasaki, and provides an in-depth look at the special features of each part of Kyushu.
Named after Kyushu, the 36th largest island in the world, this train is called “Kyushu on the Move” and starts at Hakata Station and travels counterclockwise around Kyushu Island before returning to Hakata Station.
The train runs from Thursday to Monday, with a different route every day. The black color of the train is very cool, and the compartments offer seasonal specialties such as deluxe bento, so the process of boarding the train is a travel and cultural experience in itself.
It is also possible to travel on just one section of the train depending on your needs. As the entire train is reserved, you will need to reserve your seat in advance.
🤗 03 JR Kyushu Sightseeing Train Limited Express “Kanpachi / Ichijuku”
The JR Kyushu Sekuhachi/Ichiru Express is a new sightseeing train on the Yufu Kogen Line, which began service on April 26 this year, running between Hakata (Fukuoka) and Beppu (Oita).
Designed by industrial designer Ruiji Mitooka and featuring a three-car lineup, the train's exterior is black with gold lines depicting the route map of the Yufu Plateau. The interior of the train is made of cedar wood from Fukuoka and Oita Prefectures.
The train offers delicious bento lunches made with selected ingredients by the culinary masters of Fukuoka and Oita. There are “hospitality stations” at stations along the route where visitors can receive warm hospitality from the people of the area, interact with the locals and buy special products, and experience the culture of the area through the different “hospitality” at each station.
Inside the bus, there are sofas, tatami mats, and private rooms to choose from, providing a high degree of privacy. Bento (Japanese-style lunch box) is available on different days and is carefully selected by the chefs of famous restaurants in Fukuoka and Oita!
