Since Emperor Huanmu moved the capital to Heian-kyo in 794, Kyoto has played a pivotal role in Japanese civilization. If Tokyo represents the modern side of Japan that has embraced the times, then Kyoto can be seen as a symbol of Japan's traditional culture.
A stroll through the streets of Kyoto reveals a city full of stories in every corner.

You can't imagine that the ordinary confectionery store on the corner could be a long-established business that has been passed down for more than a dozen generations, uniting the sorrows and joys of an ordinary citizen's family;
Or, an unassuming stone monument on a crowded main street in the downtown area tells you that this was once an ancient battlefield, which takes you back to a time of war filled with swords and swordsmanship that could have changed the course of Japan's history;
Or, just attracted by the quiet and rustic atmosphere, decided to casually turn around the small temple, but hidden carefully preserved for hundreds of years, comparable to well-known museums of national treasure artifacts......
Such an experience, in any other city, would be unexpected; but in Kyoto, it makes sense.

For this citywalk, we focused on Sakyo-ku in Kyoto City. Sakyo-ku is located in the northeastern part of Kyoto City, and is named after the left (eastern) side of the Emperor's Imperial Palace, based on the concept that the Emperor sits in the north and faces south.
There are many temples and shrines in the area, which should not be missed by cultural travelers: we can witness the vicissitudes of a thousand-year-old temple in Tendai's True Gokurakuji Temple (Zenrokudo), and experience the wabi-sabi beauty of Zen Buddhism in the dry landscape of Ginkakuji Temple. ......

🤗 True Jokhang Temple (Zenrokudo) 10:15-11:30

True Jokrakuji is a temple of the Tendai Sect founded in the 2nd year of the Yongguan era (984) by the preceptor, Shonin. “There are many temples called Jokrakuji, but this is the only place where the spirit of true bliss is found.” With this confidence, the main hall of the temple is also called “Zenrudo”.

As a thousand year old temple, there are countless precious artifacts in the True Jokhang Temple. Not to mention the statues of Buddha, the “Great Nirvana Picture” and the “Sutra Mandala” in the temple is also a masterpiece.

In addition, the “Nirvana-no-Tei” and “Karma-no-Tei,” designed by renowned gardeners Saburo Sone and Chiaki Shigehimori, respectively, allow us to enjoy the view of the 36 peaks of Higashiyama while enjoying a dry landscape.

🤗 Lunch: Kadokoro Kyoto Kitashirakawa 11:45-12:45

For lunch, we chose Kadokoro, located in the Kitashirakawa area. Osaka is famous for its Krab Shackle, so what is the flavor of Kyoto's Krab Shackle? In addition to the seasonal cuisine that changes with the seasons in Kyoto, the special experience of looking up at the view of Mount Omonogatari will be unforgettable.

Prices for the lunch set range from 2,500 yen to 4,000 yen.

🤗 Ginkakuji Temple 13:00-13:50

Ginkakuji Temple was built in 1492 by Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the 8th shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate, modeled after Kinkakuji Temple, and was originally a mountain lodge in Higashiyama, a famous place for enjoying the moon.

There are beautiful buildings and gardens: the unique dry landscape, the “Silver Beach” and “Moonward Terrace” made of white sand, the tea pavilion, the pond, and the spring ...... are all Zen-like in nature. Wabi-sabi aesthetics.

The blue pond reflects the Silver Pavilion, and the green water sets off the inked pine. Strolling in the Silver Pavilion Temple, the “simple and dull” brought by the original wooden color tone, let people gradually calm down and feel the true meaning of life.

🤗 Fa Rang Yuan Tea Party 14:00-16:00

In the early Edo period (1680), Monk Manmu and Monk Shinobazumi of Chion-in Temple built this temple in memory of their patriarch, Ho-Ran-senjin.

The thatched-roofed gate, clad in emerald green moss, comes into view as you walk up the hill through a dense forest. Horyangwon is a Pure Land Sect Zen center, which is small and hidden among the famous monuments in Kyoto. However, there is an elegance hidden in the seclusion, so it is no wonder that many great writers, such as Junichiro Tanizaki, stayed here after their deaths.
The garden Tsubaki no Tatei in Horyuin is called “Kōkawa ‘, and the designer is said to have invoked the Chinese saying ’The Three Smiles of the Tiger's Creek”. This is Kyoto, and in the smallest detail, you can still feel the imprint of the Chinese civilization that has been integrated into Japanese culture.

🤗 Philosophy Trail 16:00-16:20

It is said that Kitaro Nishida, a Japanese philosopher and professor at Kyoto University in the early 20th century, used to walk and meditate along the riverside path, which gave the path its name.

💡
Walking to the end of the path, this Kyoto citywalk is declared to be over. We hope that this one-day tour has given you a deeper understanding of Kyoto as a thousand-year-old city, as well as Japanese Buddhism and the tea ceremony~.
