Leaving Hakone, Kamakura is an excellent next stop. Famous in this country for Slam Dunk, Kamakura is actually an ancient city full of temples, and quiet is its most usual appearance. If you've seen the Kaiju Diary, you'll understand what that means. Avoiding the Golden Week in China and Japan, and avoiding the crowded seaside intersection in front of Kamakura Gakuin, why not start from Kamakura Kita, and continue to follow the footsteps of Hisagi and Rinko from Paradise Lost in measuring this small town.
🤗 Kitakamakura
Some say that Kita-Kamakura is the real Kamakura. Go there during the Purple Sun Flower Season, and from Kita-Kamakura Station, head to Madogakuji Temple, Meigetsuin Temple, Tokeiji Temple in that order, and then walk all the way to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. On the way, you pass through a semi-open-air tunnel, which is a perfect scene for portraits in light and shadow.
🤗 Hinokuji Temple
If you take a bus eastward from Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, you can come to Hinokuji Temple. The temple is best known for its bamboo grove and the tea pavilion deep inside the grove where you can enjoy freshly brewed matcha tea by the aunts. There is another temple, Sugimoto-ji Temple, across the street, and the long mossy stone staircase in front of the temple gate is also worth visiting.
🤗 Hasegaya
Take the Enoshima train and get off at Nagaya station. As this is the home of the Gotei Daibutsu and Nagaya Temple, the streets are naturally crowded with tourists, which is a bit of a bummer. However, if you take a shortcut down one of the several west-facing alleys that run perpendicular to the Tengizawa-Kamakura Line, the world becomes silent again. If it's late June, you can walk all the way west to Goryo Shrine, where trams and zoysia flowers are in the same frame.
🤗 Shichirigahama
After strolling through Nagaya, you can rejoin the train, or better yet - walk all the way to Shichirihama by the sea via Jokuraku-ji Temple. Slowly make your way around the bay in the glow of dusk, and if the sky is clear, Mount Fuji will suddenly come into view. Walking on the beach, surfers and swimmers are coming ashore in the sunset light, and the lighthouse of Enoshima is slowly lighting up. There are a couple of nice and famous restaurants along the way from the beach, Double Doors and bills are both here (but they are not really that good).
🤗 The Bank
Take the train from Shichirihama back towards Kamakura Station and get off at Wadazuka Station, where you can walk to a very distinctive bar called The Bank, which is also really a former bank, and is warmly lit in orange.
