In Tokyo, you can experience the food culture and traditional cuisines that have been deeply rooted in Japan since the Edo period. Whether it's the historical and unique Tokyo local cuisine or the modern and innovative new cuisine, you'll be able to savor the city's richness and charm.
🤗 The Four Heavenly Kings of Traditional Cuisine
During the glorious Edo period, four types of Japanese cuisine - unagi, sushi, tempura, and soba - were perfected and honored as the "Four Heavenly Kings of Edo Cuisine" because of their distinctive taste and exquisite preparation techniques.
1.Eel rice
Each dish carries the richness of Japan's culinary culture and history. Whether it's the flavorful grilled eel, refreshing buckwheat noodles, crunchy tempura, or delicate and delicious sushi, it's a dish you'll never forget.
In Detective Conan, Genta always eats eel with a happy face. And unagi with rice bushels is a uniquely Japanese culinary art, which is in a class of its own and unique when compared to unagi dishes from around the globe. After being delicately gutted and boned, the eel is coated with a special sauce - a sweet and spicy sauce made from a soy sauce base and a blend of sugar and mirin, each drop of which is filled with the craftsman's heart and wisdom. The eel is then roasted over a charcoal fire, where it gradually gains color and aroma, and each bite is full of flavor, making it a culinary masterpiece.
When it comes to kabayaki eel, you have to mention eel donburi, a dish that goes hand in hand with it. This dish originated in the Nihonbashi area during the Edo period, where unagi was gently placed on top of white rice to create a delicacy that is rich in color and flavor. Imagine savoring this unique Japanese dish in the birthplace of kabayaki eel, where its rich taste and cultural heritage are intertwined, and you'll be satisfied like never before.

2.Sushi
Sushi is now popular all over the world, but its origins are deeply rooted in Tokyo during the Edo period. The original sushi was the simple and pure "nigiri sushi", which was made by gently topping sashimi on vinegared rice and then skillfully kneading it by hand.
In the past, nigiri sushi the size of rice balls was sold on the rooftop, and diners could eat it directly with their hands, which was convenient and fast, similar to modern fast food culture.
The "Edomae Sushi" is even more unique in that it uses mellow red vinegar to give the vinegared rice a slightly attractive red color. What's even more unique is that the ingredients are carefully seasoned in advance, which complements the flavor of the fish and makes it unforgettable.
Today, in the streets of Tokyo, you can still enjoy this "Edomae sushi" that retains the characteristics of the Edo period. Give it a try and let your taste buds travel back in time to feel the ancient and pure deliciousness.

3.Soba noodles
"Soba" is a dish made from buckwheat flour, the essence of buckwheat seeds, and is carefully processed.
Paired with a special buckwheat dip sauce and green green onions, each bite exudes a charming aroma and taste. In the Edo period, it was used as a symbol of "fast food" along with nigiri sushi, and it quickly won the love of many diners.
During the prosperous Edo period, three famous soba restaurants were born, "Yabu", "Shoko", and "Sunba", which were known as the "Imperial Three Restaurants", each of which created the three major schools of soba.
To this day, there are still many soba restaurants in Tokyo that have been passed down from generation to generation, carrying down ancestral recipes and bringing authentic taste and flavor to diners.
Among them, soba restaurants of the "Yabu" style are particularly popular in Tokyo, with dozens of them in number. This genre of soba noodles has a solid and chewy texture and a rich sauce that is evocative.
When you see a soba noodle shop with the word "Yabu" on it on the streets of Tokyo, you might as well lift the warm curtain and step inside to taste the delicious taste that has been passed down for 100 years.

"Tempura" is a traditional Japanese dish that originated in the Edo period, and its unique charm brings out the freshness of seafood and the freshness of vegetables. The ingredients are coated in a batter made of wheat flour and water, and after deep-frying, they become crispy and delicious, and each bite exudes an enticing aroma.
Along with sushi and soba, tempura was a daily roadside snack in the Edo period, and was loved by the common people. However, as its popularity grew, so did the art of making tempura. The ingredients have been carefully chosen, the cooking methods have been refined, and even the batter recipe has been improved with the addition of eggs to make the taste more delicate.
The Edo style of eating "Edo tempura" in the Edo period brings out the essence of this dish to the extreme. The ingredients are gently wrapped in a batter as thin as a cicada's wing, and the original taste and aroma of the ingredients are preserved after deep-frying. Dip it in a special tempura sauce and the taste is simply intoxicating.
Today, you can still enjoy tempura with the charm of Edo at many specialty stores in Tokyo. This traditional Japanese cuisine, which has been introduced from a common food stall to a high-end restaurant, is not only a delicacy, but also a cultural heritage. If you're in Tokyo, don't miss out on this exciting feast for your taste buds.
